The Nouveau Roman literary movement, preoccupied with the nature of reality, changed our conception of the novel as a narrative form. Alain Robbe Grillet’s experimental anti-novels, Djinn (1981) and Recollections of the Golden Triangle (1994) present haunting, disorienting time fractured events. Fantasy, dream, and reality merge, with the estranged protagonist (lost between past and present in a labyrinth-like search for meaning) sent on some mysterious undisclosed mission. One of the characters, the enigmatic detective Franck V. Francis, has stepped out of Robbe Grillet’s novels and into my lyrics to continue his search. It was only until I had finished recording the song that I realised the influence of John Barry on the music which perfectly suits the noir theme.
